Welcome to Project Abraham
Our mission is to facilitate bringing Yezidi survivors of ISIS to the safety of Canada, make their adjustment to Canada less difficult, and their integration more successful.
The Road to Recovery
On the morning of August 3, 2014, ISIS fighters entered the Yezidi city of Sinjar, bent on total destruction. In the days that followed approximately 10,000 Yezidis were executed in cold blood – shot, beheaded, burned alive.
As ISIS overran Sinjar, thousands of Yezidis fled to Turkey. Approximately 15,000 Yezidi refugees, mostly women and children, now live in UNHCR camps in Nusaybin, Diyarbakur, and Midyat.
There is a word for what the Yezidis have endured. It is genocide.
Project Abraham relies on our volunteers to deliver our services to Yezidi families living in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). We now have 55 volunteers working on the ground providing dedicated support to 20 families, and have more than 300 Project Abraham volunteers working to support the needs of the larger GTA Yezidi community.
What we do
- help find housing, furniture, household goods and clothing
- drive our families to their appointments
- teach basic skills of daily living
- teach English language skills

Project Abraham has raised over $145,000 to sponsor five Yezidi families under the Government Family Reunification Program.
Our Project Abraham volunteer resettlement groups support both our privately-sponsored families and the Government Assisted Refugee families (GARs) that were brought to the GTA.
Family Reunification
With our many partner organizations, Project Abraham has helped organize many special events and outings for the Yezidi community, including our Annual Project Abraham Community Picnic.

Yezidi New Year and Eda Rojiet Ezi are times for the Yezidi community to celebrate the joy of freedom with our Project Abraham volunteers, and with friends and partners from the larger Canadian community.
The Road to Recovery
Despite the unfathomable terror and hardship they have suffered, the GTA Yezidi community has shown their love and gratitude by inviting us into their lives with open hearts.
They pray for us, and we in turn pray that we can help them on their road to recovery. We wish for them a full and prosperous life in Canada, free from persecution, and all the happiness they so deserve.
